The Sculpture of Ancient Olympia

Of all the sculpture in ancient Olympia, the most famous statue by far was the chryselephantine statue of Zeus located in the temple of Zeus. This  statue was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and was created by the master sculptor of the time Phedias. In the statue Zeus is crowned with an Olive Wreath and is holding a Nike or Victory in his right hand. In his left hand Zeus is holding a sceptre which is topped with an eagle.
The statue was made of wood, but was covered with ivory and gold sheets. The face of the statue was made of ivory and the hair and beard of Zeus were made with gold. The statue stood over 42 feet in height and the temple of Zeus had a special spiral staircase built near the statue so that it could be viewed from all different angles.
